Bored, yet?
By now you're probably fed up of me yammering on about the house and what not, if you are, you'll probably want to stop reading now as this is going to get real boring, real fast. ;)
The topic today is locks, yes you read that right, locks, we bought locks for the new place. I warned you it was going to be boring. ;)
We picked them out on Friday evening and left them at Home Depot to have them serviced so that we'd need only one entry key. I think we got about 5 in total: front door, garage door, side entrance, basement door and bathroom door. We opted for the antique pewter finish, see pics below:
We chose this for the front door, but instead of the lever handle in the pic we got the round knob instead as the lever wouldn't accomodate a door that swung open to the right, even if the packaging said it would.
That's about it, tonight we get to go pick them up.
Tomorrow we're on break.
Wednesday we're meeting with our lawyer to sign final documents.
Thursday is moving-boxes-to-the-garage and inspection night.
Friday is installing locks and cleaning-before-moving-in night.
And then Saturday is the big moving in day.
5 more sleeps. :D

'k... I have to ask... 'bathroom'??? Or do you just mean you're replacing the passage lock on the bathroom (or installing one)?
We need to work on locks, too... but of course, we weren't smart enough to pay attention to the locks when we were there any of the previous trips *laugh* I'm hoping we can get back in a few days before closing for that (and to make sure the house is still in one piece... got burned on the current place like that, don't want to get burned again!)
So... did you still need extra hands on Thursday? 'cuz Dave may or may not be working late... and I may well need a night off from packing our stuff *laugh* So let me know if you need a hand with any of it.
Otherwise... see you Saturday bright and early! *grin*

*LOL*
We wanted the colours to be the same throughout the foyer so we opted to change the lock on the mainfloor powder room and basement inside door to match the others that we needed to replace [like the front door, side entrance and side garage door]. The lock on the basement door is essentially a closet door type of lock with no keys, so just the knob, and I think for the powder room we got one of those push button locks. The others we needed to have keys for.
Yeah we took measurements [basically took a photo of the lock with a tape measure next to it], though we never ended up using them? I think Kevin eyeballed it, at least I hope he did because we are customizing the darn things. :)
What was wrong with the current place, you mentioned you got burned on that one?
Remember you're going to need to get fire insurance as well for the mortgage, might want to look into that one when you talk to the utilities, I think we added it on to our pre-existing home insurance through RBC.
I'm going to check with Kev about Thursday and get back to you, I'm not sure as yet how many people are coming.

Insurance is all taken care of... all that's left is the final papers for the 'mortgage', a few signatures here and there with the lawyer and such... and arranging for the utilities to be moved.
Oh yeah... and that pesky packing *laugh*
Oh... by getting burned, I was referring to the amount of damage done to the property in the 15 days between the offer being accepted and me getting the keys. In those 15 days, they broke 3 doors, put large, suspiciously fist-shaped holes in 2 walls, ripped out a fixture of some description, took half the plants from the garden, and the hose-reel. In all, we estimated $750+ to repair and replace what they'd done in the 15 days. If I'd gone back in a day or two before closing, I'd say a lot of that could have been addressed before they stopped taking calls from lawyers. *shrug*
I'm not so worried about this one... it's not a case of a separation or anything, and they seem like relatively 'normal' people *laugh*, but still... once bitten, twice shy *shrug*
Keep me posted about Thursday

The one for the door to the basement isn't a lock. Just a matching door knob to look the same as the others. :)
And what's up with needing messages approved now?? Was this a problem before?

Ruth, another set of friends had a similar issue when they moved in, instead of the previous owners taking stuff though they LEFT behind all their garbage and the lawyer apparently couldn't do anything about it. We're using the same lawyer this time so I mentioned it ahead of time to him.
I can't seem to get a straight answer out of either him or our agent though on what our rights are if we inspect the house after the documents are signed and we aren't happy with it.
Kevin, does Massimo understand that even though we're signing tomorrow that if anything is missing or damaged in the house when we inspect on Thursday and again on Friday night that we're going to want compensation?
Ruth, any idea what happens here if we aren't happy?
Also my parents said that in their contract it stated that the sellers were responsible for up to one year after the deal has closed for anything major that goes wrong? They ended up having to claim this when their basement backed up or something like that.
Oh and my bad, I was fiddling around with the comments section and must've hit the moderate comments button by accident, it's all fixed now. :)

All I know is that when it happened to me, my lawyer tried attempts at diplomatic resolution, asked me to provide an estimate of 'damages', and when diplomacy didn't work said that if it was really ipmortant to me, I could go after them in small claims court... but really I'd probably end up spending more than I'd get *sigh* So I didn't really pursue it beyond that.
We had a clause (it's not that unusual) in our offer that said that the sellers warranty against major issues with the appliances and utilities for 12 months, but their agent caught it and nixed it. Our agent said he puts it in all his offers, sometimes the listing agent catches it, sometimes not... but looking at the offer on our place, it's not in there, so I guess it varies from agent to agent.
As for leaving stuff behind... we inherited a computer and some other junk left in the basement... unless they leave a huge mess, compensation is unlikely. If whatever's left is in working order, you can try calling GoodWill (actually, you can try that in any case... they have refurbishment and training facilities that might use whatever)... if they want it, they'll often come pick it up. Otherwise, you'd have to take it to the waste transfer station on Bermondsey and pay whatever nominal fee is associated with it. Again, you could try to pursue them in small claims, but you may end up spending more than you'd get and STILL have to pay to have it hauled away.

Thanks for the feedback, Ruth.
On Sunday, I woke up early in the morning, grabbed a box of garbage bags and headed outside to deal with the mess, between Kev & I we managed to break everything [except for the tire which we'll bring to a gas station] into bits that can be stuffed into garbage bags and then we placed these bags at curbside.
We got about 9 bags in total of THEIR garbage [in addition to about 3 bags of OUR garbage] then with the permission of our neighbours we got them distributed along the street so we wouldn't exceed our six bag limit.
I was/still am pretty peeved that they left the stuff sitting there and then lied about arranging pick up for it, they had stuff like sponges and other small pieces of crap that got soaked with water and started to grow mould, that they could've just put into a garbage bag before placing it on the curb.
Yup, not happy with those folks, they'd better not be ringing my door bell anytime soon, not unless Kev's planning on entertaining them by himself.
